Craps: the game hiding the fairest bet in the casino
The table looks impenetrable and most of it is a museum of bad bets. But one wager carries literally zero house edge, and it is available to everyone.
The game in two minutes, honestly
Ignore the layout for a moment. The core game involves one bet and two dice. The come-out roll: ⢠You place a Pass Line bet ⢠7 or 11 on the first roll: you win immediately ⢠2, 3 or 12: you lose immediately ⢠Any other number (4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10) becomes the point After the point is established: ⢠The shooter keeps rolling ⢠If the point comes again before a 7, you win ⢠If a 7 comes first, you lose That is the entire game. Everything else printed on the felt is optional, and most of it is worse. The Pass Line carries a 1.41% house edge. The Don't Pass ā betting against the shooter ā carries 1.36%, marginally better, at the social cost of winning when the table loses. Both are among the best bets in any casino.
Free Odds: literally zero house edge
Once a point is established, you may place an additional bet behind your Pass Line wager. It is called taking the odds, and it is the only bet in the building paid at true mathematical odds with no house margin at all.
| Point | Odds bet pays |
|---|---|
| 4 or 10 | 2 to 1 |
| 5 or 9 | 3 to 2 |
| 6 or 8 | 6 to 5 |
Those payouts exactly match the real probability of the point appearing before a seven. The house takes nothing. Why this matters: it dilutes the edge on your total money at risk. A Pass Line bet alone costs 1.41%. Backed with equal odds, the blended edge on the combined amount falls to roughly 0.85%. At three times odds it drops to about 0.47%, and at higher multiples it keeps falling toward zero. What to do: ask the table what odds multiple is permitted ā it varies, and it is usually posted. Bet the minimum on the Pass Line and put the rest of your intended stake behind it as odds. Same money on the table, substantially less of it going to the house. This is not a loophole. It is a standard, advertised feature that most players walk past.
The rest of the table: a museum of traps
The centre of the layout, with the bright colours and the big payouts, contains the worst bets in the casino.
| Bet | House edge |
|---|---|
| Pass / Don't Pass with odds | Under 1% |
| Place 6 or 8 | 1.52% |
| Place 5 or 9 | 4.0% |
| Field | 2.8% to 5.5% |
| Big 6 / Big 8 | 9.1% |
| Hardways | 9.1% to 11.1% |
| Any 7 | 16.7% |
Any 7 costs nearly seventeen percent. It sits in the middle of the table, it pays 4 to 1, and it is the single worst common bet in the casino. Big 6 and Big 8 are pure trap design. They pay even money on exactly the same outcome that the Place 6 and Place 8 bets pay 7 to 6 on. Identical event, six times the cost, and the only difference is where you put the chip. The practical rule: Pass or Don't Pass, backed with maximum odds, plus Place 6 and 8 if you want more action. Everything in the centre of the table can be ignored permanently.
Craps online: RNG, live, and the complete strategy
RNG craps is dealt by software. It is fast, which is its main danger ā the edge applies per roll, and software rolls far more often than a live table. Live dealer craps streams a real table. Slower, more social, and better for your bankroll for exactly that reason. Check whether the odds multiple offered matches a physical table, as online limits are sometimes lower. The complete strategy, which fits in five lines: 1. Bet the table minimum on the Pass Line 2. Take the maximum odds allowed behind it 3. Optionally Place the 6 and 8 4. Ignore everything in the centre of the table 5. Set a session budget and a time limit One caution on bonuses: craps is frequently excluded from wagering requirements or weighted at zero, precisely because a player taking full odds is playing at close to break-even. If you intend to play craps, check the bonus terms before accepting an offer, or decline it. Played this way, craps offers one of the lowest costs of entertainment available in a casino. Played by scattering chips across the centre of the felt, it is among the most expensive. Same table, same evening.
