Sports prediction markets: futures & event contracts
What sports markets you can trade on Kalshi and Polymarket — championship futures, season totals, awards — how they're priced and how they settle.
Which sports markets you can trade
Sports prediction markets focus on longer-horizon, outright outcomes rather than single match lines. Typical contracts include: • Championship futures — will a team win the title this season? • Season win totals — will a team finish above a set number of wins? • Division / conference / qualification — will a team reach or win a stage? • Awards and milestones — MVP winner, a player passing a season landmark. This is the sweet spot for prediction markets: outcomes that play out over weeks or months, where a live, tradeable probability is genuinely useful.
How sports event contracts work
Each market is a Yes/No event contract priced in cents, and the price is the implied probability. A team to win the championship trading at 30¢ means the market gives it a 30% chance. Each winning share settles at $1, losing shares at $0. Buy the Yes share at 30¢; if the team wins the title you receive $1 (a 70¢ profit per share). You can also sell before the season ends to lock in a profit if the team's price climbs — the position trades like a market the whole way through.
Kalshi's regulated sports contracts
Kalshi has expanded into sports event contracts within its US-regulated, USD-based framework — a notable development because it offers a regulated route to trade sports outcomes as event contracts rather than as traditional bets. Polymarket also carries sports markets, settled in crypto on its decentralised platform. Which one you can use, and which specific sports and leagues are listed, depends on the platform and your jurisdiction — and both evolve as rules change.
How they resolve
Sports markets settle against the official result or final standings once the season, tournament or event concludes — for example the recognised championship result, or a team's certified win total. As with every prediction market, the resolution criteria are decisive: what counts as 'winning', how a cancelled or shortened season is handled, and the exact cut-off date. Read the contract's terms before trading so an edge case doesn't catch you out.
Liquidity, timing and staying sensible
• Futures build liquidity over a season — a title market is thin in pre-season and deepens as the picture clears. • News moves prices: an injury or a winning streak reprices the market, and you can trade that move rather than holding to the end. • Prediction markets are strongest on outrights; for deep in-play and match-by-match markets, a sportsbook is still the tool — see our separate comparison of prediction markets and sportsbooks. Educational information only, not financial advice. Sports outcomes are uncertain by nature — only stake what you can afford to lose.
