Prediction markets vs sports betting: which is better?
Pricing, margins, range of markets, flexibility, liquidity and regulation compared — so you know when to use a prediction market and when to use a sportsbook.

The core difference
With a sportsbook, you bet against the house: the bookmaker sets fixed odds and takes the other side of your bet. With a prediction market (like Polymarket or Kalshi), you trade against other users in a market — you buy and sell shares in an outcome, and the price moves with supply and demand.
That one difference — house-set odds vs a peer-to-peer market — drives almost everything else below.
Pricing and margin
A sportsbook builds a margin (the 'overround' or 'vig') into its odds — the reason the implied probabilities of a market add up to more than 100%. That margin is the house's edge on every bet.
A prediction market has no bookmaker margin; the price is set by traders and simply reflects supply and demand, so pricing is often tighter and closer to true probability. You pay through the bid-ask spread and any platform fee instead. For an efficient, liquid market, prediction-market pricing can be better value than a sportsbook's.
Range of markets and flexibility
Range: sportsbooks focus on sports and casino. Prediction markets cover almost any event — elections, economic data, crypto prices, awards, and increasingly sports too.
Flexibility: on a prediction market you can sell your position any time before the event ends, taking profit or cutting losses as the price moves — it trades like a market. Sportsbooks sometimes offer a 'cash out', but it's on the bookmaker's terms and usually at a worse price.
Liquidity, bonuses and regulation
- Liquidity: sportsbooks offer deep, instant liquidity on major sports. Prediction markets are deep on popular events but can be thin on niche ones.
- Bonuses: sportsbooks compete with welcome offers, free bets and rakeback. Prediction markets generally don't — you're trading a market, not chasing a promo.
- Regulation: this varies a lot. Kalshi is US-regulated fiat; Polymarket is decentralised crypto with regional restrictions; sportsbooks range from strictly licensed to offshore. Always check what's legal and available where you live.
Which should you use?
Choose a prediction market when you want to trade on non-sports events (politics, economics, crypto), value tight pricing with no house margin, and like being able to exit a position early.
Choose a sportsbook when you want deep liquidity and a huge range of sports markets, value bonuses and promotions, or simply prefer fixed odds and a familiar betting experience.
Many people use both: a sportsbook for sports and bonuses, a prediction market for events and sharper pricing. Whichever you pick, the fundamentals stay the same — understand the pricing, manage your bankroll, and only risk what you can afford to lose.
